Throughout this past year and beyond, I’ve realized that our home and its atmosphere are so important for our well-being. With stay-at-home recommendations, it’s ultra necessary to feel safe, comfortable, and happy in your own home! A sanctuary, you might call it. After the start of fostering our two sweet daughters and getting to know them more, we wanted to update their rooms to match their personalities more. With back to school also coming up quickly, we thought it would be great to spruce up the rooms and get them ready for after-school relaxation! My hope is that you can use some of these to spruce up your own child’s room, as well!
Here are some of my tips for sprucing up your child’s room:
Tip 1: Keep the decor to a minimum to help your child keep their room clean.
I’ve never been one to keep a lot of things. I regularly look through our home for things to sell or donate. To me, it’s much easier to keep a room and home clean when there are fewer items to keep track of or try to keep in a specific place. Fewer items = less time cleaning. Less time cleaning makes me much happier! I’m sure you can relate! In this same way, I’ve passed this slightly more minimalist mindset on to our girls.
We keep one large “toy” in their room. Lately, it’s been either their bean bag chair or their rocking horse/unicorn. They love being able to switch between the two items!
Tip 2: Put extra toys in a dresser drawer or in the closet to keep the room tidy.
I know that my children need ample space to put toys to keep their rooms looking beautiful. We decided we’d use the two bottom drawers of their dresser for toy/box storage. This works really well. We’ve taught them to be careful with their drawers and they now use them essentially as a toy box! Any medium toys that don’t fit well in the drawers go into the closet (i.e. a barbie playset).
Tip 3: Find a bed that your little one loves, that will last.
Initially, we had a plain grey toddler bed from IKEA for our eldest daughter, who came to us when she was 4 years old. After nearly 8 months of the girls being in our family, we realized she was ready to upgrade to a bed she’d love! After searching for a while, I finally came across an upholstered bed with blush pink velvet and silver nailhead details. It was too cute to pass up, yet being a blush pink, she wouldn’t outgrow it too quickly. Even teenagers like blush!
Tip 4: Add a pop of color with your curtains, the bed, and/or artwork/stuffed animals.
Personally, I prefer neutral colors for our home. This even extends into our children’s rooms. I’m sure if our girls had it their way they’d tye dye their rooms with neon colors and throw sparkles everywhere… but that just isn’t going to fly in our house. 😛 Our pops of color are added in from the bed, artwork, and stuffed animals. The bed will stay for a while, but the artwork and stuffed animals can change as often as you’d like!
Tip 5: Use a shelf system to encourage books & some stuffed animals to be displayed, not strewn on the floor.
As soon as I saw acrylic bookshelves, I knew they would be a great addition to the girls’ rooms! Rather than take up floor space with a book bin, it seemed like a win-win to put the books on the walls! In this way, the books are also displayed which is a constant reminder to the girls to grab them and read/page through them! Recently, the girls have been loving using the shelves as a display for their stuffed animals. It’s so cute and I encourage it! The stuffed animals may change daily, so the excess just goes into the drawers, but that keeps the girls feeling like they are switching up their rooms often, all the while keeping it clean!
Tip 6: Keep your carpets fresh, beautiful, and clean by vacuuming and spot treating, if needed.
Soft, plush carpet in children’s rooms is a must-have for me. In fact, I love the carpet in our bedroom and the guest bedroom as well! I don’t remember if I told you, but when we moved into our new home, the previous owners JUST replaced the upstairs carpet to exactly the style that I wanted with an ultra-plush carpet pad! We felt so blessed to not have to update ONE MORE thing. Truly, there is a carpet style, color, and pattern for every room AND everyone, but we were so happy they picked the one we also liked!
In addition, the warmth and comfort that carpet provides is perfect for bedrooms, especially children’s rooms. Kids seem to gravitate towards carpeted areas when they play so they have a soft cushion underfoot or under their tush!
[Side note: Did you know it’s a myth that if you have asthma or allergies you need to remove carpet? Updated asthma/allergy guidelines from the National Institute of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) do NOT include recommendations to remove carpet as a way to treat asthma and allergies.]
Lastly, and definitely not least, we love how carpet helps dampen the sound of toys and the patter of little feet and reduces slips and falls. I can’t even imagine how loud our home would be if we didn’t have carpet upstairs!
We like to vacuum upstairs at least once a week. Sometimes more. If we need to spot clean the carpet, we use our non-toxic cleaner that my husband made and quickly spray it on, let it sit, then soak up the excess. Good as new in no time!
Tip 7: Let a kid be a kid!
As a Type A personality, it can sometimes be challenging not having a home that’s not 100% clean. But in all reality, that happens a lot more than I thought it would. Kids are kids…AND you should let them be kids! I’m not saying they can keep their room a mess every day, but not everything needs to be picture perfect. Life and family are more important than a clean, Pinterest-perfect home! Hug those little ones often and let them take part in the design plans and decorating of their rooms! 🙂
P.s. Take a look at how the room looked when we purchased the home. Such a change, right?!
